Read full Volvo V90 reviewThe Volvo V90 is a practical and classy choice that rides and handles well if you specify it with the optional adaptive dampers and avoid massive alloy wheels. It isn't that cheap to buy and it suffers quite heavy depreciation, which are two reasons we rate the BMW 5 Series Touring more highly, but the V90 is definitely worth a look if you can bag yourself a great deal.

See full engine specsIf you’re dead set against a diesel but can't stretch to the Recharge T6 plug-in hybrid, this 194bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol is a fine option – indeed, it's our pick. It's pretty quick in a straight line (0-62mph takes 7.9sec) and officially it's capable of averaging around 40mpg, but you'll need to drive it very carefully to hit that in the real world.
