The Prius is powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine and an electric motor that combine to produce 220bhp. That’s enough for an official 0-62mph time of 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 109mph.

<p dir="ltr">Toyota is a company undergoing a quiet revolution, as it works hard to replace its sensible but somewhat bland reputation with one for being a bit more daring, in areas such as the styling of its cars and its enthusiastic leadership of cutting-edge technology, such as hybrid systems.</p>

The latest version of the hybrid Prius is also rated highly by What Car?; it’s the first Prius to go on sale that our testers have felt can truly compete all round with existing petrol or diesel rivals.</p>

This is the entry-level trim for the Prius and it comes with plenty of equipment as standard, including keyless entry, a 12.3in touchscreen infotainment system with sat-nav, rear privacy glass, a rear-view camera and dual-zone climate control.

New Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius is more appealing than ever and this latest version is the best we’ve tested. It’s quieter and rides more comfortably than a VW Golf eHybrid, plus it remains fuel-efficient even with a depleted battery. However, rear passenger space is tight and the Golf eHybrid is a better company car option thanks to its much longer electric-only range. The cheaper entry-level Design trim is likely to be the best choice.
