Used Peugeot 5008 2017-present review

This current Peugeot 5008 has been a huge sales success and it's made for a terrific used buy for a fair few years now.

With a raised-up driving position and its rugged looks, it might come as a surprise to learn that this large SUV can house seven people, making it very useful for anyone with an expanding family, and in part explaining the extra length over the similar-looking but five-seat Peugeot 3008.

Engines & Performance: There’s a good range of engines, for one. Petrols can be had with a 128bhp 1.2-litre engine or a 163bhp 1.6-litre unit, while diesels are served by a 1.6-litre engine in 99bhp or 118bhp or a 2.0-litre version with 148bhp or 178bhp. Later versions added a 128bhp 1.5-litre diesel, with commendable performance and fuel economy. The 5008 is strictly front-wheel drive, but you can have an automatic gearbox as an option.

All engines push the 5008 at a good lick – even the 1.2 petrol, which turns out to be surprisingly smooth and eager to rev and easily up to the job of hauling a fully loaded car around. The 1.6 petrol adds more pep, but at the expense of fuel economy. The 1.6 and 2.0 diesels get along well, too, with plenty of low-down grunt, with the 178bhp version especially lively.

Ride & Handling: The 5008 does pretty well, too, with quick steering, plenty of grip and safe and predictable handling – albeit with a bit more body lean than one or two of its rivals. The car rides well, too, on suspension that is quite softly set up; only on the larger 19in wheels of some top-spec versions does the 5008 start to notice potholes and road irregularities a little too keenly.

Moreover, the 5008 is a very refined car and is at its best on motorways, where wind and road noise are well contained, with engine noise generally low. The car works well with an automatic gearbox, too, adding an extra air of suaveness to proceedings.

Interior & Practicality: Inside is an impressive and solidly built interior with an excellent driving position and good visibility. The materials are especially impressive, with soft-touch materials used where you see and interact with the most, with chrome highlights and stylish cloth inserts adding a touch of flair. The 5008 follows the Peugeot design philosophy of mounting its instruments high up on the dashboard, above the eye line of the very small steering wheel. It works well here, as does the layout of the major and minor controls, although temperature has to be adjusted on the touchscreen and is an occasional nuisance.

There’s more good news in terms of space and the 5008's seating flexibility. Aided by sliding and reclining individual rear seats, rear passengers will be happy to sit for quite long journeys with three abreast. In the third row are two flip-up seats that are suitable for children or smaller adults for short journeys. The boot is huge with all seats folded and still very large with the second-row seats up. There’s a small space left even with the third-row seats up.

Trims & Equipment: Trim levels kick off with Active, which comes with electric windows, dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, auto lights and wipers and much more, while next-step-up Allure throws in sat-nav, a rear-view camera, 18in alloy wheels and privacy glass. Top-spec GT and GT Premium trims gets larger wheels, sporty interior trimmings and a panoramic glass sunroof, although it should be noted that this does restrict the rear head room a little.

2020 facelift: Outside, there are new LED headlights and taillights, a redesigned ‘frameless’ front grille and the 5008 model name moved to just above the grille.

Inside, the centrally mounted infotainment touchscreen grew in size from 8.0in to 10.0in (on Allure trim upwards). Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring were made standard across the range. The 12.3in ‘iCockpit’ digital dashboard was upgraded to be clearer and easier to read than before, and its new graphics are crisper and more legible at a glance.

You can buy a used Peugeot 5008 for around £13,000 – expect 2017/'18 model with around 80,000 miles on its clock. There's a mix of petrol and diesel cars to choose from.

Up your budget to around £17,000 if you fancy a 2020 example, rising to roughly £25,000 for a 2023 car. For a nearly new 2024 model, have upwards of £29,000 to spend.

MPG: The most economical 5008 on paper is the later 1.5 BlueHDi GT Line Premium, which has a claimed official average fuel consumption of 70.6mpg under the older NEDC tests and CO2 emissions of just 106g/km. The 1.6 100 diesel claims 68.9mpg, while the 1.6 120 diesel has an average 67.3mpg. The top-performing petrol is the 1.2 130 with a claimed 55.4mpg.

Later figures tested under the more realistic WLTP tests recorded 48mpg for the 1.2 petrol, 60.8mpg for the 1.5 diesel, 43.3mpg for the 1.6 petrol and 51.1mpg for the 2.0 diesel.

Road tax: Annual road tax for all cars registered after April 2017 will be at the standard flat rate for road tax, currently £190 per year.

Servicing and insurance: Insurance costs are reasonable, too, with groups ranging from 11 to 21 for the faster 2.0 diesels.

Peugeot has a number of different servicing plans that offer flexibility in payments and length of contract, and servicing costs on the whole are lower than many of its rivals.

Reliability

The Peugeot 5008 shines in reliability, according to our annual What Car? Reliability Survey, backed by real-world owner reviews. Most owners report minimal faults, marking it as a dependable choice. However, experiences with the dealer network show a mixed bag; while some dealers are commended for their swift and effective service, particularly with warranty issues, others fall short with slow responses and poor communication. There are mentions of sporadic issues mainly concerning the electronics and engine, but these are few and far between. The 5008's reliability is generally high, but the dealer service experience may vary.

The smooth and punchy nature of the 1.2 petrol engine would get our vote, because it combines decent fuel economy and performance, as well as a good dollop of refinement. We’d try to seek out a car in Allure trim, since it features most things you'd need on Active trim plus niceties you'd really want.
