The Peugeot 408 is pleasant inside and fairly well equipped. The closely-related Citroën C5 X is more comfortable and cheaper to buy, but the plug-in hybrid 408's slightly longer electric range makes it a better choice for company car buyers. The entry-level Puretech 130 makes the most sense for private buyers, and we recommend Allure Premium trim.

Range-topping GT trim is the most expensive in the line-up, but does get a lot of (non-essential) luxuries. That includes a heated steering wheel, a power-assisted tailgate, matrix LED headlights, fancier materials inside and ambient interior lighting.

The range-topping 408 is only a little bit quicker than the cheaper Hybrid 180. Performance is punchy, and the transition from electric to power is fairly smooth. It offers an official electric range of 40 miles.
