This is a plug-in hybrid version of the CLE, combining a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a 25.4kWh battery. A combined output of 308bhp is available provided you have enough charge in the battery, which is good for a 0-62mph time of 6.3 seconds.

Mercedes’ line-up is vast – ranging from the A-Class family hatchback through to staple saloons such as the C-Class and E-Class, and onwards towards multiple SUVs, luxury saloons and even sports cars. Coupés and convertibles are thrown into the mix as well.

As one of the ‘big three’ German brands, Mercedes most often finds itself competing with Audi and BMW but more recently has found itself fending off Jaguar and Volvo, too.

Mercedes models are known for comfort. One example of this is the E-Class, because while the Audi A6 has a plusher interior and the BMW 5 Series handles better, the E-Class is probably the most comfortable for a long motorway journey.

The Mercedes CLE Coupé might not stand out as exceptional value, it's a compelling choice as a comfortable, long-distance cruiser with a touch more practicality than its closest rivals. The 300e plug-in hybrid also offers a unique coupe company car option if you don’t need outright practicality. Meanwhile, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 performance version offers a great balance of performance and everyday usability, but is a costly alternative to a similarly quick BMW M440i.
