The model
Read full Mazda MX-30 R-EV reviewThere are more practical plug-in hybrid SUVs out there, but if space isn’t a high priority, the Mazda MX-30 drives well and has a smart, well-equipped interior. The R-EV version is far more usable than its EV counterpart, too. The battery is large enough to cover short trips on pure electric power, while the petrol engine allows you to venture beyond town and city life without worrying about plugging in.
The trim
See full equipmentOur favourite trim provides plenty of kit, including an 8.8in infotainment screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, and a rear-view camera.
The engine
See full engine specsThe only option is a 36kWh battery powering an electric motor, which offers tepid acceleration (0-62mph in 9.7sec) and one of the worst battery ranges of any current EV: 124 miles (WLTP). A range extender – with a small petrol engine that charges up the battery as you go along – will join the line-up soon.
