There are more practical plug-in hybrid SUVs out there, but if space isn’t a high priority, the Mazda MX-30 drives well and has a smart, well-equipped interior. The R-EV version is far more usable than its EV counterpart, too. The battery is large enough to cover short trips on pure electric power, while the petrol engine allows you to venture beyond town and city life without worrying about plugging in.

We wouldn’t blame you for paying just a little bit more for Exclusive-Line to get a few more luxuries, including eight-way electrically operated heated front seats, front lumbar adjustment and keyless entry.

The only option is a 36kWh battery powering an electric motor, which offers tepid acceleration (0-62mph in 9.7sec) and one of the worst battery ranges of any current EV: 124 miles (WLTP). A range extender – with a small petrol engine that charges up the battery as you go along – will join the line-up soon.
