The Kia Ceed Sportswagon is a decent estate car in lots of areas and has a very competitive starting price. However, it doesn't give us a compelling reason to recommend it over the better-handling Ford Focus Estate, the more practical Skoda Octavia Estate, the fuel-efficient Toyota Corolla Touring Sports or the more refined and comfortable VW Golf Estate.

The cheapest trim includes 16in alloy wheels, automatic headlights, a leather trimmed steering wheel and gearknob, air-con, cruise control, all-round electric windows, electrically adjusted and heated door mirrors, plus a reversing camera and 8.0in infotainment touchscreen with smartphone connectivity.

The only engine option is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol with 138bhp and a 0-60mph time of 9.7 or 9.9 seconds, depending on whether you choose the quicker manual version or the optional auto gearbox.
