The Hyundai i20 is a solid all-rounder with the ability to please many potential buyers. It’s well equipped, roomy inside, punchy yet economical and should hold its value well. Still, even after a midlife update it doesn't truly stand out in any area. The Audi A1 has a plusher interior, the Seat Ibiza is better to drive and the Renault Clio has a bigger boot. Mid-spec Premium trim is the best choice if you do buy an i20.

The sportiest version of the i20 is well-equipped for the money. It comes with a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, 18in alloy wheels, automatic climate control, power-folding door mirrors, privacy glass, keyless entry, a 10.3in touchscreen, a DAB radio, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, wireless phone-charging, built-in sat-nav, LED headlights, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and digital instruments. Safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking, lane assistance, traffic-sign recognition and e-Call emergency response.

The i20 N hot-hatch variant has a 201bhp 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, and it loves to be revved out. Pace is lively: when we tested it, it went from 0-60mph in 6.4sec, and the official top speed is 142mph. It's even relatively economical, averaging 40mpg in our real-world testing.
