The Cupra Tavascan offers plenty of kit, a competitive range and an excellent safety score, plus it’s sharper to drive than its Volkswagen ID 5 sister. However, it’s let down by inconsistent brakes, while the best rival electric SUVs are also more comfortable and able to charge faster.

As well equipped as the V1 model is, we reckon it’s worth at least upgrading to V2. Desirable extras include heated and electrically adjustable front seats, adaptive suspension, a panoramic glass sunroof and a 360-degree bird’s eye view camera. What’s more, the standard seven-speaker stereo is replaced with a 12-speaker Sennheiser premium audio system.

While we’re still to try this model, its performance looks impressive enough on paper: the 0-62mph sprint takes 6.8 seconds, while the official range between charges is 353 miles.
