The model
Read full BMW Z4 reviewThe BMW Z4 will appeal to those looking for a comfortable and relatively practical convertible sports car. However, if you're looking for something that's primarily precise, fun and exciting to drive, the Porsche 718 Boxster outshines it considerably.
The trim
See full equipmentM Sport trim brings an even more aggressive look, although you’re not getting a whole lot more than added style for your money with a sharper-looking body kit, gloss black accents and an M Sport leather steering wheel being the main equipment upgrades. Yes, you also get firmer M Sport suspension and beefier M Sport brakes (on the sDrive30i), but these don't do a lot to make the driving experience more thrilling.
The engine
See full engine specsThe sDrive 20i's 194bhp, four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine offers decent performance, but for keener drivers its performance is underwhelming (0-62mph comes in a relatively lazy 6.6 seconds) and it sounds rather dreary and monotonous when accelerating hard. The sluggish eight-speed automatic gearbox, which comes as standard, doesn't add to the sports car theme, either.
