The BMW i4 is fast (especially in M50 guise), comfortable and extremely hushed at high speeds. Factor in a decent range, a great infotainment system and a plush interior and it's a compelling alternative to a Tesla Model 3. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that the Model 3 is much cheaper and comes with a world-class charging network – helpful if you cover a lot of miles.

The range-topping M50 benefits from 19in wheels, adaptive M suspension, M sport brakes, a ‘gurney flap’ rear spoiler, a head-up display and a plethora of driver assistance functions.

This range-topping variant combines ridiculous acceleration (0-62mph takes just 3.9sec) with a long range between charges. Well worth a look, but we suspect the cheaper eDrive40 will be fast enough and it will get you even further on a battery charge.
