Much bigger estates are available for considerably less money, the best of which is the Skoda Superb Estate, while the BMW 3 Series Touring is as classy as the A4 Avant but more fun to drive.

See full engine specsThe 148bhp 35 TFSI needs to be worked fairly hard when building speed in a hurry but it'll tick off 0-62mph in 8.9sec and it's the most frugal petrol engine, averaging just under 45mpg (officially).
