We're running a BMW i3 range extender on the long-term What Car? fleet and are already finding out the pros and cons of driving an ultra-low emission car. You get good performance and low running costs but might have trouble charging the car when you're out and about.
The i3 is the latest car available in the ultra-low emission class. Here's our pick of its used rivals that you can find in the What Car? Approved Used classifieds:
Nissan Leaf
Nissan's Leaf is the best-selling mainstream electric car in the world. This '12/62 model has done just 2400 miles and is on sale for £12,000. It's got a generous spec, including front and rear heated seats and a spoiler with built-in solar panel. The Leaf has an official range of 124 miles.
Renault Twizy
The cheapest car on the list is the basic Renault Twizy. This '12/12 model has a meagre 50 miles on the clock and will set you back £4750. This car is black with orange seats and highlights and comes with the optional doors. The Twizy has a range of 62 miles.
Renault Zoe
Renault's more traditional electric car is the Zoe. It seats five and has a 120-mile range so is more useable than the Twizy. This 2013 Dynamique Zen model comes with alloy wheels, sat-nav and Renault's R-Link infotainment system. It's done 950 miles and is on sale for £11,995.
Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid
The Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid can't match the other cars on the list in terms of electric-only range – it can manage just 15.5 miles – but thanks to its petrol engine, it does away with range anxiety. This '12/62 car has covered 21,000 miles and is on the market for £19,500. Its official fuel economy is 134.5mpg and it emits 49g/km of CO2.
Vauxhall Ampera
Vauxhall's Ampera is a range-extended electric car that has an electric-only range of 50 miles. This 2013 car has done 10,000 miles and is on sale for £25,999. It comes with cruise control and an upgraded stereo system and has an official fuel economy figure of 235.4mpg while emitting just 27g/km of CO2.
