New Volkswagen T-Roc vs used Audi Q2 – alternatives

The Seat Arona is a sharply dressed small SUV based on the latest Ibiza. You can choose from a range of petrol and diesel engines that offer plenty of punch and reasonable running costs. Our favourite is the 1.0-litre turbocharged engine that's similar to, but not as powerful as, the engines in the T-Roc and Q2 we’ve chosen here. The Arona is good to drive and has a decent ride, plenty of safety kit and reasonable space. New, its price also undercuts that of the T-Roc.

The Mini Countryman feels larger than the Q2 and offers more interior space. The boot is practical and of a good size, and the interior quality gives the Q2 a run for its money. On the downside, its driving position is not as good as the Q2’s and the ride can be firm. New, it costs more than the Q2, but a used example can be had for around the same price as our two cars here.

The bottom line is you’d be happy with either of these; they’re good to drive, comfortable to ride in and stylish enough to cut a dash on the school run. The new T-Roc offers more rear space and a bigger boot. In the Q2’s favour, it has a much nicer and notably more upmarket interior, and in some quarters it could be said that flashing an Audi key carries more kudos than carrying a VW one. On running costs, there’s little in it, and the two are very evenly matched on the road, too, with the T-Roc having the slightly better ride and the Q2 the more engaging handling. In the end, it might simply come down to whether you prefer the idea of a brand new car or see yourself in a slightly plusher one with a few months under its wheels.
