5 September – Smartphone bugs

I’ve mentioned in the past that the MG 5’s infotainment software is not a strong point. The menus are confusing, the graphics looks a bit dated and it’s just a bit annoying to interact with.

Fortunately, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring are standard. Unfortunately, the actual connection can be unreliable.

MG 5 infotainment

When I plug my phone in it charges without a problem, but CarPlay often won't run. And sometimes when it does, the infotainment system will randomly disconnect from it and then refuse to reconnect.

This is particularly frustrating when using sat-nav apps. You can imagine the pain when, after finally getting CarPlay to work, you approach a confusing roundabout somewhere new and the sat-nav screen suddenly cuts out.

Further investigation is needed to see if it’s a fault with the car or my phone – I’ve got a service due soon so will ask the question then.
