Mazda Hazumi concept revealed
* Mazda Hazumi hatchback revealed in full * Almost identical to production-spec Mazda 2 * New 1.5 Skyactiv-D diesel beats 83mpg...
This is the Mazda Hazumi concept car, which gives a strong indication of the styling of the next-generation Mazda 2 hatchback.
The Hazumi is 407cm long, 173cm wide and 145cm tall, which means it’s almost identical in size to the Renault Clio.
This is the first time that Mazda’s Kodo design language has been applied to a car of this size, and there are plenty of styling cues from other models in the range. While the front bumper and contoured waistline are reminiscent of the latest Mazda 3, the steeply angled tailgate is closer in appearance to the back of the CX-5 SUV.
Some of the more extravagant details include 18-inch alloy wheels, twin exhaust tailpipes and a split-level boot spoiler, plus ultra-slim door handles and wing mirror stalks. With the exception of these show-car details, What Car? understands that the production-spec Mazda 2 will be almost identical.
Mazda is using the Hazumi’s debut to launch the latest Skyactiv-D diesel. The 1.5-litre engine that powers the concept is likely to have between 100 and 110bhp, and is also set to provide a lower-powered diesel option for the Mazda 3 hatch and CX-5 SUV.
In the Hazumi concept, this engine has CO2 emissions of less than 90g/km, which means that the official fuel economy is more than 83mpg. In the Mazda 3 and CX-5, this engine should be capable of achieving a sub-100g/km CO2 figure.
The 1.5-litre Skyactiv-D runs through a six-speed automatic gearbox in the Hazumi. It has start-stop techology as well as the i-ELOOP energy recuperation system. The latter can store electricity and use it to power features such as the headlights and climate control.
In the cabin, the Hazumi has a matt black leather fascia with contrasting white around the instrument panel. The seats are covered with dark red nubuck leather. The infotainment includes Mazda’s MZD Connect system and the heads-up display as seen in the latest Mazda 3.
The new Mazda 2 will have the same Skyactiv fuel-saving technologies seen in the 3, 6 and CX-5 models. We expect it to go on sale in early 2015.
