All the stops were pulled out for the Audi E-tron – the brand's first production electric car. This posh SUV packed lashings of luxury and tech and, as a result, it initially demanded some deep pockets to buy. In 2019, its starting price was £71,520.
Fast forward to today and you can pick up an E-tron for just £26,000. Let that sink in for a moment: you can have this flagship Audi SUV for less than the price of a new Ford Focus – and less than a used BMW iX3 or Mercedes EQC.
What’s the catch? Well, those rivals have much longer ranges than the entry-level E-tron 50. Therefore, you might want to spend a bit extra and get the more competitive 55 version, which can officially travel for 241 miles between charges. And guess what? Used prices for that version start at around £30,000, which still undercuts those aforementioned rivals.
All E-trons have four-wheel drive, and all are incredibly hushed, at high speeds or low; in fact, few cars can match it for refinement. The E-tron rides very well, too, with its air suspension doing a grand job of wafting you along when the car is in Comfort mode. It deals with bumps better than the EQC and Tesla Model X can. For the smoothest ride, go for an E-tron Technik or Sport; their 20in wheels are better over bumps than the bigger wheels of higher trims.
Even entry-level Technik trim is generously equipped, coming with heated front seats, part-leather upholstery, LED headlights, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera. Inside, a sharp 10.1in infotainment touchscreen sits above an 8.6in touchscreen climate control panel.
Front and rear passenger space is excellent, as is boot space. In our tests, the E-tron managed to swallow eight carry-on suitcases below its load cover – more than the rival Jaguar I-Pace can manage. There’s also a second, smaller boot at the front of the E-tron for your charging cables.
