Car of the Year Awards 2025: Best small car for practicality
Despite the fashion for SUVs, the traditional small car remains the most popular type on the road, with the best brilliant all-rounders that offer excellent value for money...
Honda Jazz 1.5 e:HEV Elegance
Tall plants, bags of topsoil and compost… the bulky items we might buy at the garden centre can be tricky to get home, especially if you drive a small car. One model in this class, though, will swallow that assortment of garden goodies without batting a metaphorical eyelid: the Honda Jazz.
You see, as well as offering an elevated seating position (for easy access and great visibility) and more passenger space than its rivals, the Jazz has highly versatile rear seats. The seat bases can be flipped up to create a large, floor-to-ceiling space; you could stand those tall plants (or a bicycle) in there easily, upright, and still have lots of space for more in its large, square boot.
The Jazz comes up roses in terms of running costs, too. Being a hybrid, it’s very economical. Okay, it isn’t as frugal as the similarly powered (but less spacious) Toyota Yaris, but fuel bills will be lower than for most other rivals.
The Jazz sheds value very slowly, but that’s just as well, because it costs a lot more than the Clio. For those who appreciate its big-car attributes in a smaller package, though, the Jazz is bloomin’ marvellous.
