Car of the Year Awards 2025: Best hybrid executive car
A top-notch executive car must do it all – frugally and in style. Buyers want effortless long-haul capability, a comfortable and classy interior, and low benefit-in-kind tax rates...
Mercedes E-Class E300e AMG Line Premium
When dressing your dream kitchen, do you plump for the near-instant heat and wipe- clean convenience of an electric induction hob, or do you stick with culinary tradition and insist on the precise heat control that comes only with gas burners?
Well, there’s a lot to be said for having both. In theory, plug-in hybrids offer a similar duality of purpose, but the Mercedes E300e is among the most convincing yet, not least thanks to its impressive electric range. In generously equipped AMG Line Premium trim, its 19.5kWh (usable) battery can officially take you 70 miles on a full charge.
That may be only five miles up on the rival BMW 530e M Sport, but it’s enough to drop the E300e into the 5% benefit-in-kind tax bracket. Financially, it’s usefully cheaper to run as a company car than the 530e (8%), even if it doesn’t stack up as well as the Tesla Model 3.
The E300e is as attractive inside as it is on a spreadsheet – even if it falls short of the 530e in places when it comes to quality. With plush seats, a pillowy ride and plenty of power under your right foot, you’ll find that long motorway journeys simply evaporate.
