Car of the Year Awards 2025: Best hot hatch for everyday usability
Hot hatches should make even the most mundane of drives feel magical. However, this ability to entertain shouldn't come at the expense of everyday usability...
Volkswagen Golf GTI 2.0 TSI 265
It was the Volkswagen Golf GTI that set the hot hatch ball rolling almost 50 years ago, and the latest version is one of the best. It fulfils mundane family transport duties with aplomb and tempts you to take the twisty way home, all at a sensible price.
While not Mercedes-AMG A45 quick, the GTI is far from slow. With a 261bhp 2.0-litre turbo engine, 0-62mph takes just 5.9sec. And while only its front wheels are driven, the GTI puts its power down amicably. Yes, you could pay more for the 316bhp, four-wheel-drive Golf R, but the GTI’s lighter weight can be felt in corners; its handling is still engaging.
Its suspension isn’t as firm as you’d find in most other hot hatches; there’s more body lean in corners than in the A45. However, this means the GTI flows beautifully with the bumps and undulations in the road, while ride comfort is exceptional for a hot hatch, especially with optional adaptive suspension fitted.
Combine that with decent interior and boot space (it’s no different from the regular Golf) and the GTI is a pleasure to live with day to day, plus it’ll cost a lot less to run than the A45.
