You know when you get home after a long, hard day at the coalface, sink into your favourite armchair and instinctively go “Aaaaaahhhh” as you begin to relax? Well, that’s similar to the experience of sitting in the Volvo XC60.

There’s something particularly comforting and welcoming about its interior. Among the reasons for this are the seats. They’re perfectly shaped and superbly supportive, so you feel at one with them instantly. Then it strikes you that the level of opulence is something to behold.

There are very few hard surfaces; soft and tactile materials are used almost everywhere. The leather on the dashboard is finished with contrasting stitching, and the nappa leather covering the seats in range-topping Ultra trim is deliciously soft.

There are some bits that aren’t soft to the touch, but that’s fine, too. They include a crystal gear selector and driftwood inlays, which deliver an air of luxury that the BMW X3 can’t match.

So, while it’s more than twice the price of the Kia Sportage, the XC60 is the place to be when you can’t put off leaving that armchair any longer.
