Car of the Year Awards 2025: Best family electric SUV interior
This class embraces a useable driving range and fast charging tech, but the best must also be hugely practical and loaded with great tech...
BMW iX xDrive40 M Sport (Interior Design Loft)
The first modern electric cars were flawed machines that were about as luxurious as a stay in the I’m a Celebrity jungle. However, the BMW iX shows how far things have come; its interior combines the build quality offered by the Audi Q8 e-tron with the visual wow factor you’ll find inside a Mercedes EQE SUV.
It helps that every surface is finished with materials that update the leather-and-wood look of traditional luxury with a commendably eco-minded approach; the wood is from sustainable sources, there’s recycled (but plush-feeling) plastic, and you can have fancy microfibre fabrics instead of leather. In particular, the grey Loft interior lifts the ambience still further yet costs just £450.
We also love the fact that, despite being loaded with functions, the iX’s infotainment system is easy to operate on the move, because you can use a rotary controller in addition to a 14.9in touchscreen and voice commands. Meanwhile, the car’s high roof, flat floor and broad interior combine to give every occupant loads of space.
Yes, the iX is a pricey choice, but if you have the means, no other car in this class pampers to quite the same degree.
