When it comes to electric seven-seaters, there aren’t that many options. So the fact that the Volkswagen ID Buzz exists at all might be justification enough for a win. But it’s definitely not a winner by default; the ID Buzz is a winner because it’s a terrific car.

It might appear to be a converted van, like the Mercedes-Benz EQV, but underneath it uses the same mechanicals as VW’s electric cars. That’s why the ID Buzz handles with real aplomb compared with the EQV. It’s also much more comfortable.

As is generally the case with electric cars, the ID Buzz isn’t cheap; it’s much pricier than the Hyundai Santa Fe. Yet compared with most other electric seven-seaters, the ID Buzz is keenly priced.

We recommend the ID Buzz in mid-range Style trim, which is cheaper than the entry-level Kia EV9 whether you’re paying cash or buying on PCP finance. And the EV9 – or pretty much any other rival – can’t match the ID Buzz for sheer roominess.

Indeed, there would be space to spare with seven burly rugby props on board, plus space for their kit in the boot. Pure merit, then, earns the ID Buzz the electric category win.
