ActiveE: BMW's electric concept car
* Electric concept car launched * Based on BMW 1 Series Coupe * Unveiling at Detroit motor show...
This is BMW's ActiveE concept car, an electrically powered vehicle that's based on the 1 Series Coupe.
What's under the bonnet?
Powered by lithium-ion batteries, the car's electric motor can generate 167bhp. Combined with reduced weight and a low centre of gravity, the vehicle aims to provide the same driving dynamics and agile handling as a standard 1 Series.
Predicted performance figures include acceleration from 0-62mph in less than 9secs and a top speed of around 90mph. A single charge is expected to deliver a range of around 100 miles, depending on driving conditions.
New charging technology means that the car can be fully recharged at a high-power outlet in just three hours.

Owners will also be able to use their mobile phones to remotely check the car's battery level, search for public charging stations and activate the heating and air-con.
Distinctive design
The four-seater car will be produced in Liquid White paint, with Electric blue graphics on the roof, doors, bonnet and bootlid. Alloy wheels and a blue illuminated roof fin are additional distinctive touches.
Inside the car, the leather seats are highlighted with blue seams, while interior strips in Liquid White mirror the exterior colour.
The car will be unveiled in the metal at the Detroit motor show in January.
