The Toyota Avensis Tourer has been given the same mid-life updates as the saloon for 2012.
These include revisions to the exterior styling and improved cabin quality, although the differences are subtle.
At the front, the Avensis Tourer gains slimmer headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights, as well as a revised bumper and grille, while changes to the rear also include new lights and bumper mouldings.
Three engines are available: a 145bhp 1.8-litre petrol, a 124bhp 2.0-litre diesel and a 148bhp 2.2-litre diesel, which we tested with the six-speed automatic gearbox.
Whats the 2012 Toyota Avensis Tourer like to drive?
The 2.2-litre diesel engine is gruff and loud, made worse by the automatic gearbox, which hangs on to low gears for too long and is overly keen to kick down. The manual shift function with steering wheel-mounted paddles is slow to respond, too.
Its a shame, because the engine has plenty of torque, and wind and road noise arent overly intrusive.
The Tourers steering is light, yet precise, so urban driving is easy. Unfortunately, it doesnt weight up enough with speed, making the car feel rather nervous on the motorway. The ride is reasonably comfortable.
Whats the 2012 Toyota Avensis Tourer like inside?
Very good, actually. Like the saloon, the Tourer has a dashboard thats functional and well crafted; most of the plastics are soft to the touch, while the large infotainment screen is clear and simple to use.
The Tourer has space for five adults, too, aided by the flat floor in the back.
Even with the rear seats up, the boot is extremely large. Removing the floor reveals a three-section storage compartment, with two larger areas on either side. Access to the boot is excellent.
Should I buy one?
It is certainly worth considering, although wed avoid this engine, because its not refined enough.
The Avensis Tourer isnt as good to drive as rival estates such as the Ford Mondeo and VW Passat, but its practical and well made, and running costs are competitive.
