Mercedes’ line-up is vast – ranging from the A-Class family hatchback through to staple saloons such as the C-Class and E-Class, and onwards towards multiple SUVs, luxury saloons and even sports cars. Coupés and convertibles are thrown into the mix as well.

As one of the ‘big three’ German brands, Mercedes most often finds itself competing with Audi and BMW but more recently has found itself fending off Jaguar and Volvo, too.

Mercedes models are known for comfort. One example of this is the E-Class, because while the Audi A6 has a plusher interior and the BMW 5 Series handles better, the E-Class is probably the most comfortable for a long motorway journey.

This is the entry level trim and it comes with plenty of equipment, including 22in alloy wheels, keyless entry and ignition, a head-up display, Burmester surround-sound system, ambient lighting, rear privacy glass, a panoramic glass roof, heated front and second-row seats and massaging front seats.

AMG Line

GLS 450d 4Matic AMG Line Premium + 5dr 9G-Tronic

This is the entry-level petrol engine, with a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder motor producing 375bhp and 369lb ft of torque. It takes 6.1sec to accelerate from 0-62mph, before heading up to a top speed of 155mph. A nine-speed automatic gearbox comes as standard.

This mid-level trim adds even more luxury, especially for those who prefer to be driven. This includes ventilated and massaging middle row seats, heated third-row seats, sunblinds for the rear door windows, a pair of screens mounted on the back of the front seats and a rear tablet to control all the functions. You also get 23 in wheels and a heated steering wheel.

This is the high performance version of the GLS, with a 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine under the bonnet. Producing 603bhp and 624lb ft of torque, this takes 4.2sec to sprint from 0-62mph. Top speed is 155mph.

GLS 63 4Matic+

This uses a slightly less powerful version of the 4.0-litre V8 in the AMG GLS 63, developing 590bhp and 538lb ft of torque. This is enough for a 0-62mph time of 4.9sec.

Maybach GLS 600 4M 1st Class Night Srs

This is the most luxurious GLS. The exterior comes with 22in alloy wheels, Maybach logos and electrically extending side steps. Inside, the rear doors have electric sunblinds and upgraded Nappa leather seats.

The top-level First Class trim builds on the standard Maybach with active-body suspension, folding rear tables, a refrigerated compartment and two individual rear seats.
