The entry-level engine has only four cylinders but still produces 415bhp, and it features mild-hybrid electrical assistance, which adds a further 14bhp. That combination is enough for 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds.

When it was launched, the AMG GT produced a minimum of 577bhp, but you can now have this detuned V8 model, which produces 469bhp and still dips under four seconds for the 0-62mph sprint. Like all the V8s, it comes with four-wheel drive, whereas the AMG GT 43 is rear-wheel drive.

Upgrading from the AMG GT 55 to the 63 gives you an extra 108bhp and brings the 0-62mph time down to a smidge over three seconds. However, we reckon it’s worth spending a bit more again to get the Pro model.

Ultimate versions of the AMG GT feature an AMG aerodynamics package that includes everything from a redesigned front bumper to an F1-style rear diffuser and active aerodynamics beneath the car to help suck it to the ground.

The GT 63 S E combines the 604bhp V8 from the AMG 63 Pro with a 202bhp electric motor, which cuts the 0-62mph sprint time to just 2.8sec. As a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), this version can also drive purely on electric power, although only for eight miles (officially).

Upgrading from Premium trim to Premium Plus gives you 21in wheels (instead of 20s), plus the front seats gain a massage function and are ventilated (not just heated). Carbon fibre interior trim is another addition, as is a head-up display that can project key info onto the windscreen. And the infotainment system is upgraded to feature augmented reality sat-nav.
